Xiaomi leaks Prototype outward foldable images. Xiaomi submitted a patent application to the CNIPA in 2019 for a phone that folds outward, like Huawei’s Mate X series. More than three years after the project’s initial announcement, developer Kuba Wojciechowski (@Za Raczke) has finally shared some prototype images of the device that never saw a commercial release.
The patent application’s basic layout is seen in the prototype. The smartphone’s rear has four camera sensors, an LED flash, and a button to unlock the display. Several leaks of the phone’s inner workings suggest a twin battery cell configuration, with the giant cell having a capacity of 3,500 mAh.

We also learn that it has a Snapdragon 855 and 5G-capable X50 modem from Qualcomm. According to Wojciechowski, “very secret and very few units got it into the public,” leading us to believe that the device’s lack of longevity was its primary flaw. To yet, Xiaomi has stuck with the inward folding design for its Mix Fold smartphones. In the future, it will be interesting to watch whether the OEM gives up on an outward folding gadget.
