Google Pixel 10a May Cut Costs With Older Chipset

The Google Pixel 9a hasn’t even launched yet, with rumors suggesting it could arrive in the coming weeks. Despite this, speculation about its successor, the Pixel 10a, is already making headlines. A recent report hints at significant cost-cutting measures for the Pixel 10a, especially regarding its chipset.

Rumored Chipset Changes

Google might use a lower-performing version of the Tensor G5 chipset for the Pixel 10a. Alternatively, it may stick with the older Tensor G4, which is expected to power the Pixel 9a. This decision could mark a departure from the tradition of equipping “a” series models with the latest Tensor SoC.

While such a move may help control costs, it could also make the Pixel 10a less competitive. The Tensor G4 debuted with the Pixel 9 series in August 2024, meaning by the Pixel 10a’s 2026 release, the chipset would be two years old. This raises concerns about its ability to support advanced AI features, which the Tensor G5 is designed to enhance.

Why the Change?

Google seems focused on maintaining the Pixel 10a’s affordability. Upgrading to the Tensor G5 could drive up production costs, potentially resulting in a higher price tag. However, using an older chipset might have similar consequences if customers perceive the device as outdated.

Possible Trade-Offs

Although the Pixel 10a’s chipset maybe its weak point, Google could compensate with upgrades in other hardware areas. Details on these improvements remain scarce, but balancing cost and features will be crucial to keep the Pixel 10a relevant in a competitive market.

The Pixel 10a could set a new precedent for cost-cutting in Google’s smartphone lineup. While affordability is a priority, using an older SoC like the Tensor G4 might hinder its appeal. However, if Google introduces other compelling hardware upgrades, it could still offer value to budget-conscious buyers.
