TSMC manufactured most of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset
TSMC manufactured most of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. With their longstanding relationships, Qualcomm is likely to outsource production of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to TSMC and Samsung. New information suggests, however, that the Taiwanese manufacturer may end up with the lion’s share of orders for chips manufactured using the 3 nm technology because of the phenomenally high yield rate of 80%.

Current yield rates from 3nm GAA wafers are about 60%-70%; however, TSMC can execute between 75% and 80% of a wafer in a single implementation. If these numbers hold up, neither Apple nor Qualcomm will have problems getting their next-generation chipsets, the A17 Bionic and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, into customers’ hands.
Before forming a partnership with Silicon Frontline Technology in the United States, Samsung had a terrible yield rate of about 20%. The problem for Qualcomm and other chip manufacturers is that they are paid per wafer, and if they produce fewer chips, the end consumer, the smartphone manufacturer, would have to pay more for a chipset, which will drive up the market price and help no one in the long term.
